Choosing a Personal Injury Lawyer

Recovering from a major injury is a long and difficult process. This process is intensified if the injury is the result of the actions of someone else. If you’ve been injured due to their negligence or recklessness, you likely have to deal with insurance companies and legal issues that only add to your stress levels.

Hiring a personal injury lawyer is the obvious solution, but most people don’t have any experience hiring attorneys. Figuring out how to pick a good lawyer rather than a shady ambulance chaser is important.

The biggest factor in selecting a lawyer is making sure that he or she, or they in the case of a firm, have experience handling and successfully settling the specific type of claim that you are making. Attorneys, like doctors, tend to specialize. A medical malpractice lawyer is going to have different knowledge than someone who specializes in DUI injuries. Check that the lawyer has experience and ask about their win-loss record for cases like yours.

Once you’ve identified a few lawyers, do some research. Check their reputation in the media and through consumer advocacy groups. Make sure they are in good standing with their bar association and that they are licensed to practice in your jurisdiction. Lastly, meet with the lawyer in person and make sure that you feel comfortable with their personality, professionalism, and their strategy for your case.
