When the four boys started working together in 1973, they probably didn’t have any idea what their effect on the world would ultimately be. There was certainly hope that it might catch on, because they were playing solid and standard rock and roll, and they also had a gimmick. In the era of glam bands and arena rock, they took their cue to make the biggest statement they could, and when they donned the makeup, KISS announced themselves as one of the most iconic bands of all time. Anyone growing up in those years, or in the decades that followed, for that matter, probably tried to make their faces painted in the same way as the band.
Painting a face and wearing a costume goes back to an old tradition that finds the same seeds as the origins of theatre. The idea of making changes to one’s appearance to become something else, even temporarily, holds an appeal that doesn’t seem to go away with age.
