First Ever Youth Olympics are in Singapore

It will be a great time to be in Singapore come this August. The 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games is the first ever organized Olympic games for young athletes between 14 to 18 years of age and will start on August 14th and end on the 26th. The SYOG expects to bring in an quarter of a million people from all over the world, including the athletes, media and Olympic officials. The SYOG will consist of 26 sports, including culture and educational programmes.

The Singapore Youth Olympics will take place in 14 venues, like the Marina Reservoir, the Tampines Bike Park, the International Convention Center, the Bishan Stadium and Sports hall, the East Coast Park, Kellang Tennis Center and Kellang field, and just recently, the SYOG acquired the newly opened ‘SCAPE’ complex that is a sprawling 1.2 hectares of creative space in the heart of Singapore to engage young people to explore their interests and their passions, including the arts and sports.

The SYOG is ready with a volunteer workforce wearing eight types of uniforms to define their role in the Youth Olympics. The entire workforce and the Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, all took a pledge to reaffirm their commitment to making a successful first ever YOG and to make sure everyone has a memorable and meaningful experience. They are committed to uphold the Olympic Values of Excellence, to lead by example, to inspire the youth of the world to express, embrace and embody the Olympic Values not only at the Games but throughout their lives. Singapore’s expectations are to make the first Youth Olympics go beyond being a success, but to establish the high bar for the next YOGs host city will have to work hard in order to come up to Singapore’s standards.
